This is a piece I wrote right after the Clinton/Trump race concluded in 2016. It seems that liberals have learned nothing, and that everything in this piece still applies.
This morning, for the first time in a good while, I find I actually have something to say. A couple of things, in fact. This presidential election seems to have stymied so many on the "left" and has shown the ignorance that will prevail when lies are all that are offered, and sworn to be "truth".
The first thing. Trump won. And rightly so. "But how can you SAY that? You support misogyny, bigotry, violence?" Uh...no. I support truth, equality, and peace. I voted for the only peace candidate, Jill Stein. Unfortunately, too many of the Americans who still deign to participate in our electoral process DO support misogyny, bigotry and violence. And they picked the candidate who most represented those views. Here is a not so secret secret. THIS is what America IS. What Democrats have colluded with the GOP to let America become. America deserves to wear this face, because it is the face of truth. America IS misogynistic. America IS bigoted. America IS violent. At least the America that cares to actually support candidates who embody their own "values" is.
People who self-describe as "liberal" have let this happen. They steadfastly refused to look the party they support in the eye and see it for what it is. They berated anyone who shone a light on it and tried to get them to see that what they were, and have been for a good while. Instead, supporting a steady erosion of the rights we were assured under our constitution, as limited and insufficient as those are. They looked the other way as our Democratic led government broke every promise it made with not only continued but escalated ruthless war, erosion of privacy and the destruction of the planet itself. They made excuses as deportations, transfer of wealth to the very top and prosecution of whistleblowers reached and surpassed historic highs. They blamed the GOP, third party supporters and, indeed, even foreign powers for the shortcomings of their own candidate. They not only BOUGHT the lies, they tried to SELL them to other Americans and denigrated all who would oppose the hypocrisy. As they had denied other voices as "unviable", doing everything they could to make sure they STAYED "unviable", they left those who opposed the blatant lies with very little choice but to vote Trump, as the only "viable alternative". Seems the majority of those who bothered to vote their CONSCIENCE preferred a rude, bigoted, openly xenophobic, homophobic, misogynistic buffoon to the hidden, vehemently denied truth of their candidate's mendacity and hypocrisy.
YOU. You who rail against Trump want someone to blame? Look in the mirror, because YOU along with the so-called mainstream media are to blame for the current fiasco. Kudos for your breathtakingly obstinate, willful blindness. BOTH groups willingly, no EAGERLY colluded with the 1% to make their agenda reality. Which brings me to my second point. If you think the 1% cares which of their pre-selected candidates "won", you really don't understand politics in the US. As Greg Palast has said,
"Billionaire Rule Number two: Don’t bet on a horse when you can buy the whole damn racetrack."
Our ONLY chance was to dismantle the racetrack, yet liberals chose to invest in it even more heavily, as the 1% sat watching with glee as substantive conversation devolved into "I know you are but what am I"? They refused to see that betting on EITHER of the preselected advocates of the ruling elite would get us NOWHERE, no matter how vehemently they wanted to believe otherwise. No matter the twisted "logic" they tried to use to absolve them of their role in the continued, escalated fall of freedom in our supposed democratic country. No matter how many times they proclaimed the totally disingenuous, "I don't support her war/lies/shady dealings. I just CAN'T but she's all we've GOT!". They got what they wanted. They got third parties marginalized into virtual nonexistence by their hands. They got what they "bet on". They got what they worked so hard to achieve. They got what they deserved. Frederick Douglass wisely admonished us long ago that "power concedes nothing without a demand. It never has and it never will". They ignored his sage advice. They buckled, they were cowed, they demanded nothing but blind allegiance.. they made SURE what happened would happen. They sent the unmistakable message that "if you don't change, if you don't do what we want...we will...vote for you...again." Well played, liberals, well played.
