The Fallacy of Lesser-evilism

Updated: Oct 21, 2023

Recently, there has been an increase in the number of people trying to convince others to support the GOP’s partner in crime, the Democratic party. I saw this analogy today:

"As I tell so many of my allies on the Left - there are two idiots in the house - one idiot is punching holes in the roof, the other is setting the house on fire.. We can survive a leaky roof for a while - but if we stop harassing the hole-puncher first, the idiot with the matches will have time to burn the whole thing to cinders."

On the face of it, this analogy seems to make sense...IF you accept the premise that both are idiots - which I contend they are not, and that one is more destructive than the other. There are not two idiots - a hole puncher and one with matches. There is a very smart person pouring a slow-acting acid everywhere that not only causes relatively minor immediate damage you can see, but also continues to rot and weaken the supporting structure beneath long after the initial damage is done. The second is a reactionary who has hand grenades blowing holes here and there at an ever quickening pace. BOTH will just as surely bring down the house, but the actions of the smart person will actually HELP the reactionary with the grenades. The weakness the acid causes affects the structure of the house, making it all the more vulnerable. THAT is how 'lesser-evilism’ works. It is not one VERY bad person and one KIND OF bad person. It is two equally bad people with different tactics complimenting each other to accomplish the same goal.

Meanwhile, a third parties are attempting to reinforce and rebuild the failing structure before it crumbles to the ground - but bystanders are ignoring that activity and all pleas for assistance and support, choosing instead to, as crazy as it sounds, root for one of the two causing the damage because they believe that third party will never be able to do enough to save the house.

My question to you is this: which person in this story do you support? The acid slinger, the grenade thrower, or someone who is trying to save the house?
